Republicans party has become the “Almond Joy Party”(Guns Over People).
Sometime they act like a nut and sometime they don’t.
Editorial Comments by Clarence
Piner Jr 2.1.2013
Scamming IRS has become a big and
popular pass time among our Inmates. Prisoners rake in lot of big dollars from
Uncle Sugar.
With all of the free time our
prisoner’s populations have been using their free time figuring out ways to rip
off the IRS. According to the report I was reading explain that two inmates had
scammed the IRS out of over one billion dollars. Yes you heard it, how in the
world can two crooks behind bars scam the IRS out of that much money over one
billion dollars. What were they doing with all that money? The IRS won’t give
out details on inmates’ names because it’s against their policies. Of course,
they will never make public where or how they did it. If they did they would be
inundated with copy cats.
Some of these prisoners scan the
obituaries looking for information to steal. They have access to computers in
their prison connected to the internet all paid for by US apparently,
unsupervised. They use family and friends bank accounts to have the ill gotten
gain transferred to. The money is electronically deposited to the accounts
selected by inmates.
Some of these inmates are so
slick they have been able to dupe the IRS into sending them more than 130
million dollars in refunds without sending any wage information. It appears to
me that there is a double standard for people behind bars verse, those of us
who are not. I really don’t think that’s true. However; I do have my doubts
about a system that harasses law abiding citizens over peanuts, while giving
crooks billions of dollars if this report is correct.
Republicans
Politicians at the National and State levels have demonstrated their clear
racial hatred of President Obama and his administration.
I keep hearing the politicians’
pundits in Washington, DC blame the President for the key members of
Republicans party not socializing with the President after they have been
invited to the White House. The Speaker of the house, the Republicans leader in
the senate decline a coveted invitations to review film of the Civil War
“Lincoln” and several state dinners at the white house. I for one would almost
be willing to give my right arm for an invitation to a state dinner at the
white house. Most Americans feel the
same way given the chance to be invited by the President to an official state
dinner. What a special event most American’s will never get the chance to wine
and dine with the “big shots in our nation.
For those of you who are saying
what are you talking about and I retort; how many Republicans President or any
President for that matter, where Republican leadership has declined an
invitation to a White House state dinner.
Here are the real reasons they don’t want to socialize with our
President. For those of you that need to be reminded President Obama is an
African American, a person of color, these high minded white guys can’t stand
anyone different from them. We know this because they hate women oh yes, I said
it. You don’t believe me; you need to check out the Republicans “War on Women”.
I know they have claimed there isn’t a war on women all you need to do is not
listen to what they say but look at what they do. I have a saying “I hear what
you say but I see what you do”. Let’s
get back to white House invitations; if you recall while the President and
First Lady were dancing at their ball celebrating their election victory. At
that same time a mile or so away from the ball Republicans of all levels of
governments were having drinking, dinning and perhaps having after dinners
cigars not sure about the last part. At the same time a mile or so away from
the ball Republicans of all levels of governments were plotting the demise of
President Obama and his administration. These Republicans were plotting treason
against President Obama and his administration. They should have been charged
with committing a serious act against our government. That will never happen
during this time primary because that would destroy our country. These
Republicans will hide behind the freedom of speech if these men and few women
were of a different color such as the “Black Panther”. What would they have
done? I can assure you they would at least be serving time in jail and some may
have been executed for this act of treason.
The very next day at the
confirmation hearing of Secretary of treasury Tim Geithner Republicans were all
over Mr Geithner about nothing but this was part of their plans to obstruct and
deny President Obama any success. So you need more evidence; Republican Senator
Mitch McConnell from Kentucky, stood on the senate floor and clearly stated for
the record, that they were going to do everything in their power to make sure
President Obama failed. He further stated they were going to block everything
President Obama wanted to do to move the country forward. Republicans blocked
the bill to bail the automobile industry out of its mess. They blocked the
American Job Act; they blocked everything that President proposed to get the
country out of the mess it was in when he took office. Everything was a mess
made by a Republican administration and most these guys who were blocking the
President Obama. The President tried to use the low hanging fruit to work with
Republicans but they were having none of it. If the President was for it,
Republicans was against it. This President has more senior job opening than any
other President. They did this because they believe by doing these things this
would keep him from being reelected to a second term.
More
evidence; Billionaires and Millionaires were willing to spend over a half
billion dollars to make sure President Obama didn’t get reelected to a second
term. All the money spent during the last President election didn’t help them
win the overall office. Needless to say Republicans are running all over the
place trying to figure out what went wrong. They keep pointing fingers at
everybody else but themselves. When you point one finger at your enemy or
friend four are pointing back at you. So they need to look at their selves to find
their problems and solutions. It’s your policies stupid!
Here
is another example of conservative hypocrisy
Does anyone remember the incident
when Natalie Maines the lead singer of the Dixie Chicks said “we are ashamed
the President of the United States is from Texas” during their concert tour of
Europe? She didn’t call him out of his name. She didn’t claim he was a foreign.
She didn’t say he was non American. She didn’t say he didn’t love America. She
didn’t ask about his birth certificate. Conservatives all over the country came
down on them like they have committed a sin worse than the worse sins. Not one
of these conservatives believe in the Dixie Chicks freedom of speech rights how
ironic.
Their record sales were near the
top of the album chart for 30 weeks. Their album sales slid from three to seven
spot with sales dropping from 123,000 copies to 71,000. Country music is a very
conservative genre and they don’t like people who disrespect their White
President. They don’t give a dam about
people who are insulting President Obama the only difference I can see is, one
got us into two wars and didn’t decide how he was going to pay for those wars.
He also gave his rich White buddies a huge tax breaks for the last ten years,
at a time when the country needed the tax income to help pay for the two wars.
When any of the nuts speak out about President Obama their first words are
their rights under the first amendment to say what they want. To them the truth
doesn’t matter only their freedom to say whatever they want.
The music Superstars Dixie Chicks
found that criticizing President Bush’s plans for the War in Iraq is not good
for sales. Radio stations around the country listeners were melting phone lines
to their favorite country station, requesting their music be removed from their
play lists. Some irate listeners thought the Dixie Chicks comment were
unpatriotic. For the life of me, I can’t see anything wrong with their
comments. In retrospect the claims to go to war used by President Bush and his
administration was a big fat lie! There were no weapons of mass destruction
(WMD) ever found!
I looked for blatant examples by
Progressives but none were readily available. I am sure they have committed the
same kind of bad examples over time but I didn’t find any.
Republicans
are at it again.
They are using the debts ceiling to stall the President agenda by kicking the
can down the road for three months. By having this coming up every three months
the congress doesn’t have to work on the people business. They will keep doing
this as long as the people allow them to get away with this kind of behavior.
These guys are master at doing nothing but campaigning and raising money. We
have never had a congress in office as good at doing nothing as this congress.
The American media has missed this or at least I haven’t heard anyone speaking
about it.
The
President has got to take charge of his agenda by taking it to the American
people. I think
that what they are planning on doing with Gun control safety. He is going to
have to do this with all of his agenda items if he wants his second term to be
more productive than his first term. These Tea Party Republicans have their own
agenda and it has nothing to do with the President or the American people. The
Tea Party doesn’t give a dam about the American people only their supporters
with big bucks. It’s unclear why even that’s a concern because after the 2012
election where they germander their district they don’t believe they can be
beaten in any election. I was listening to a Republican Representative on
Melissa Harris Perry show making that point. He also states the President or
the people have any leverage over them so they could pretty much do whatever
they wanted. It’s going to be very interested to see what going to blow that up
for these Americans who act like non Americans. With a statement like that, it
clearly shows you who they are working for. Surely, it’s not the people who
voted them in office. Why should they worry when you can rig the game so you
win no matter what?
Mr. President please stops
listening to the talking heads who report on your every word. Given what I have
seen, you aren’t listening to them now so please don’t start. They are there to
report the news not make the news. Sometime I think they have forgotten their
roles. If they want to be policy makers then let the voters decide. There is
nothing wrong with them voicing their opinions on different topics because this
is what I do so I guess I am a member of the “talking heads”.
Changing
of the guards
I was reading a newspaper article
in my local paper the author talked about military leaders are fired for
misconduct. To name a few of the most notable are; US Army Brig Gen Jeffery A.
Sinclair facing court martial on sex charges. the most esteemed generals Gen David Petraeus, Gen John Allen top
us commanders in Afghanistan, adulterous affairs, ethical lapses Gen Michael
Moseley, Air Force Chief of Staff failing to address several nuclear related
mishaps, Army LT. Gen Kevin Kiley, Army Major Gen George Weightman for poor
outpatients treatment, Gen Stanley McChrystal resigned after members of his
staff made disparaging remarks about the President and Vice President. From
sexual assault harassment to pornography, drug and drinking these are problems
facing our military as well as our nation at large. The military is a micro
cosmos of America therefore any problems in the country will certainly show up
in our military’s leaders. Taken together four in ten commanders at the
battalion command level (Lieutenant Colonel) level and above were fired for
behavioral since 2005. The military come from main stream America with all of
their idiosyncrasies.
I was talking about this with one
of my retired Command Sergeant Major friends and he reminded me that he could
see the changes taking place as he was retiring out of the military. He said to
me that the standards we once held true and honored no longer hold true. The standards we subscribed to are not the
standards of the new generations. I say to them “shame on you and that is to
bad” some of the complaints that I have been hearing about sexual harassment in
the military. I could not believe this kind of bad behaviors is tolerated by
our military leaders. Given what has been happening to our senior leaders, I
can only imagine the kind of bad behavior that’s going on in our fine military.
This is very depressing to me as a former military leader.
Democrats
get a spine:
Democrats are always talking about being fair when Republicans are doing
everything they can to win at all cost. When are democrats going to play the
games by the rules Republicans have established to steal elections at all
levels of governments. It’s absolutely
puzzling to me to continue be beaten at everything thinking that Republicans
are interesting in playing fair. I say to democrats get your head out of the
sand and keep your eyes on the prize. Republicans have no intention of playing
fair they are playing to win they know that democrats will cave on any
confrontation. Republicans know if they want to find out what democrats are
doing all they need to do is check their local news channel and someone will be
speaking about their plans or someone in the democrats planning party will be
talking when they speak republicans have big ears. On the other hand
Republicans are very tight lips about their plans.
Republicans
rip off: On
Monday 21 January 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King birthday’s and President Obama
second inauguration republicans in the great state of Virginia was working
overtime to steal all future elections. Their actions could have a wide range
of impact on our republic. Virginia law makers in the State Senate found an opening
to create mischief and they did. The Virginia state senate is split 20
Republicans and 20 Democrats. The Virginia Senate was in session this day and
one democrat Senator was attending the Presidential inauguration in Washington,
DC about one hundred miles away. He therefore is unavailable to vote.
Republicans seeing their opportunity to steal all future elections ran through
a vote on a gerrymandering districts voting map. So they passed it by just one
vote the missing state Senator was all they needed. Republicans controlling the
House, Senate and Governor Office so you can see they had taken advantage of
their opportunities.
There is something else’s in the
mix that apparently they had forgotten, you can only change the electoral maps
only once in a decade. Just a short time after the 2010 elections Republicans
rush to gerrymander the electoral maps in their respective states. This is why
it’s so important to vote in every election. We the voters can no longer take off from voting in the non
Presidential elections. Democrats in the past have focused on
Presidential elections while they are extremely important the President is only
one man. Our attention must be on local and states elections. This is where the
action is and the biggest impact legislations pass by these mostly white males
will have a major impact on your life. This is where all of the rules are made
we must live by. Also, where the taxes we pay for everything we pay tax for is
decided. These guys who are elected have the power to appoint all of the non
elected people who are responsible for serving on all kind of boards. Some of
these boards set fees that are not authorized by the voters but rather by the
governors, mayors or head of a county government. Real Estate property taxes
are the most notable of these taxes. All of these appointees are being rewarded
for their help in getting their appointers (bosses) elected to their offices.
In some circles we call this payola or bribes pure and simple.

BOEHNER TO REID:
‘GO F**K YOURSELF’
An unenthusiastic hug between
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid & House Speaker John Boehner after their
remarks for the late Sen. Daniel Inouye (Chet Susslin)
Now it’s no secret that tensions
have been running high between Democrat and Republican leaders. Indeed, the
entire “fiscal cliff” ordeal has been marked by partisan backbiting and
back-and-forth bickering.
Still, every now and then you get
a story that surprises you.
For instance, we knew Speaker
John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) were not
exactly on friendly terms. However, we were unaware that it allegedly came to a
head last Friday when the two ran into each other outside of the Oval Office.
House Speaker John Boehner
couldn’t hold back when he spotted Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in the
White House lobby last Friday.
It was only a few days before the
nation would go over the fiscal cliff, no bipartisan agreement was in sight,
and Reid had just publicly accused Boehner of running a “dictatorship” in the
House and caring more about holding onto his gavel than striking a deal.
“Go f— yourself,” Boehner sniped
as he pointed his finger at Reid, according to multiple sources present.
Reid, a bit startled, replied:
“What are you talking about?”Boehner repeated: “Go f— yourself.”
The harsh exchange just a few
steps from the Oval Office — which Boehner later bragged about to fellow
Republicans — was only one episode in nearly two months of high-stakes
negotiations laced with distrust, miscommunication, false starts and yelling
matches as Washington struggled to ward off $500 billion in tax hikes and
spending cuts.
The House on Tuesday passed the
Senate-backed measure to avoid the “fiscal cliff” by a vote of 257-167.
WAS BECK RIGHT?
POTENTIAL FOR A LA CARTE CABLE TV CHANNELS PICKS UP STEAM WITH INTEL UNBUNDLING
RUMORS
Glenn Beck has said that the
future of cable television will be a la carte, where the consumer subscribes
only to channels they want to watch instead of a bundle with hundreds of
unwanted shows. New reports indicate Intel has been working on a set-top box
that would do just that.
Kelly Clay for Forbes wrote such a device would “kill the cable industry as we
know it.” Here’s more from Forbes’ report on the technology:
This set-top box, said by
industry insiders to be available to a limited beta of customers in March, will
offer cable channels delivered “over the top” to televisions anywhere there is
an Internet connection regardless of provider. (Microsoft Media room, for
example, requires AT&T’s service, and Xbox has limited
offerings for Comcast and FiOS customers). For the first time, consumers will
be able to subscribe to content per channel, unlike bundled cable services, and
you may also be able to subscribe per show as well. Intel’s set-top box
will also have access to Intel’s already existing app marketplace for apps,
casual games, and video on demand. Leveraging the speed of current broadband,
and the vast shared resources of the cloud, Intel plans to give customers the
ability to use “Cloud DVR”, a feature intended to allow users to watch any past
TV show at any time, without the need to record it ahead of time, pause live
tv, and rewind shows in progress.
Janko Roettgers for GigaOm wrote that the project is still
top-secret but
he’s learned from several sources that it’s being called “Intel Media.”
Roettgers described the project as being “run like a startup in stealth
mode.”
The box itself might sound
similar to other products on the market, like Roku and Apple TV, but Roettgers
wrote Intel might have an advantage over its competition by delivering services
to more than just TVs. Tablets, PCs and other devices with a Wi-Fi connection could
be included.
Clay for Forbes also stated that
Intel’s inclusion of Hollywood in the project might give it an edge as well.
“As Intel has approached
Hollywood with much more dedication (and dollars), this is likely the single
reason that Intel, more than any company before it, has the potential to really
bring to consumers the things we have never seen in online content before, such
as live sports, release schedules that match broadcast, and first episode
through current libraries for video on demand,” Clay wrote.
In terms of the unbundling of
cable channels moving forward, Roettgers said he’s skeptical of that happening.
Jeff Bercovici for Forbes spoke with Dish CEO
Joseph Clayton in 2012 and wrote that straight up a la
carte packages are not quite where the company is headed yet:
“I don’t think that’s practical,”
[Clayton told Forbes.] “I think the consumers would like to see that. We could
do it from a technical standpoint. There are some limitations. But the
programmers are never going to do that. They’re going to bundle. Look at
AMC. AMC has some good shows, original programming. But they force us to take We
and IFC and Sundance, which nobody wants to watch. So I don’t think that’s
about consumer choice. That’s a jam job.”
“I think we’re going to get to a
point at some place in time where we have pushed to consumer to two, three
hundred dollars a month for programming. They’re not going to accept that, nor
can they afford it. Then the industry will say “Oh my gosh,” and we’ll have to
pull back and look at the model. When that is, I do not know.”
These content agreements with
media companies is setting back Intel’s
project, the
Wall Street Journal reported.
Still, as Bercovici pointed
out, at an Oct. 2 debate about customer control of television choices Beck
said ultimately “the days of the network dictating how you watch it, when you
watch it, what you watch and exactly what order you watch it in are over.”
It was rumored that Intel would
reveal details about the project and its box at the upcoming Consumer
Electronics Show in Las Vegas, but Clay reported a spokesperson saying that
while it will be holding a press event, discussion of this product specifically
would not be included.

PASTOR’S WIFE BUYS GUN FROM TX SHOP — AND SHOOTS HERSELF DEAD IN THE
PARKING LOT
A tragic and bizarre story has
unfolded in East Dallas, Texas, where Harriet Deison, a pastor’s wife, was
found dead after shooting herself inside of her vehicle over the weekend. The
65-year-old woman purportedly bought a pistol at a local gun shop just before
using the weapon to take her own life in the store’s parking lot.
Authorities contend that Deison
killed herself with the gun after purchasing it at the McClelland Gun Shop, a
Texas firearms supplier; the incident unfolded around 2:15 p.m. on Saturday.
The death leaves police with few answers, as the GA Daily News reports that a suicide note was not left
at the scene.
According to the Daily Mail, Deison was married to Pete
Deison, a pastor at Park Cities Presbyterian
Church. The
mother and grandmother also ran Minwood One Corp., a business that the outlet
describes as “an administrative and services support company.”
In an op-ed published on
Chattanoogan.com, Roy Exum, a friend of the Deison family, described the
pastor’s wife as “beautiful.” Exum’s praise of the family showcases just how beloved Deison was in the community:
The reason I tell this story is
because my extended family loved the Deison family very much. For years we
worshipped with them, we dined with them, we laughed with them and, yes, we
have cried with them when sometimes life seemed to go awry. What great
Christians! What fabulous Children of God!
For literally decades Harriet and
Pete propped us up, assuring us that by God’s grace a New Dawn was coming – as
unstoppable as the New Year itself – and that if only we would place our faith
and trust in Jesus Christ things would take a better turn. So help me, that
promise has never failed me. (Oh, sometimes God doesn’t show up the moment you
call Him but, brother, He’s always right on time!)
Further, as Pete has dedicated
his entire life to the counsel and comfort of fellow strugglers, quite often he
called on Harriet for her tender help, to which she always responded in such a
loving and gentle way that neither anguish or incident stood a chance. Now this
… oh my goodness, now this.
Considering that no note was left
at the scene — and taking into account Deison’s role in the community —
many questions remain. Some are asking whether the weapon accidentally went off
in the car. Others are delving into questions surrounding Texas’ gun laws and
whether a longer waiting period might have saved the woman’s life.
As for this latter point, the
process of receiving a gun, background check included, only takes about 20
minutes. After going through the rather quick acquisition process,
customers like Deison can simply walk out of the store, firearm in hand.
Considering that the pastor’s
wife took her life in the McClelland Gun Shop parking lot right after
purchasing a gun, it’s likely that criticism of this process will abound. The
federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives plans to investigate
whether the shop followed protocol in selling the weapon to Deison.

WITH ‘FISCAL CLIFF’ LOOMING,
GUESS WHO OBAMA IS GIVING RAISES TO…
President
Barack Obama’s newest executive order put an end to the pay freeze on federal
employees, giving some federal workers a raise, including Vice President Joe
Biden.
Biden
will earn $231,900 beginning March 2013, a roughly $6,000 bump from the
previous year,The Weekly Standard reports,
citing official disclosure forms.
Members
of the House and Senate will also get a small pay increase of $900 as annual
compensation for members of Congress will jump to $174,900 in 2013.
They
may not be huge pay increases, but the timing of the executive order is
interesting as Obama and Congress are currently trying to avoid going over the
so-called “fiscal cliff. Meanwhile, Americans are tightening their belts and
preparing for potentially higher taxes.
Finally,
a pay raise seems to indicate that Congress and other federal employees have
been doing a good enough job to warrant one. Do you think Congress and federal
employees like Joe Biden deserve a raise?
FOX NEWS HOST: WHITE PEOPLE
AREN’T AFRAID OF BLACKS, THEY’RE ‘AFRAID OF MORON, IDIOT LIBERALS LIKE MICHAEL
MOORE’
On Friday, the hosts of Fox News’
“The Five” blasted liberal filmmaker and provocateur Michael Moore for
suggesting that white gun owners are motivated
by racial fears when buying firearms.
Even the left-leaning Juan
Williams found Moore’s comments “unnecessary.” He said adding race into the
conversation for no reason distracts from the “reality” that gun control was
first implemented as a way to stop blacks from owning guns.
But co-host Eric Bolling went
off.
“Michael Moore is wrong. White
people who own guns aren’t afraid of freckle-faced Jimmy down the block, and
white people who own guns aren’t afraid of black people breaking in or holding
them up,” he said. “White people are afraid of moron, idiot liberals like
Michael Moore who think they will get their guns taken away because they have a
liberal Democrat in office… S0 [white people] go out and they buy guns and make
sure they have guns before these idiots have their way.”
“I think we’ve been frightened
ever since we landed on these shores…We were frightened of the native people,
we were frightened of the slaves we brought over — as we should have been. And
those in power have known how to manipulate us with fear.”
[...]
“We’ve got over a quarter-billion
guns in people’s homes. And they’re mostly in the suburbs and rural areas where
there is virtually no crime and no murder. So why is that? What are they really
afraid of? What do they think of — who’s going to break into the house?”

Fiscal cliff:
Economic winners and losers
By Kate Dailey BBC News Magazine
The American Taxpayer Relief Act
kept the US from going off the fiscal cliff. Once the bill becomes law, who
will gain - and who will feel the pinch?
The political ramifications of
the 2012 American Taxpayer Relief Act - also known as the bill that kept the US
from falling off the fiscal cliff - are still shaking out. While the Act pushed
through a raft of tax hikes (favoured by the Democrats) without doing much to address
spending cuts (promoted by the Republicans) parties on each side say they
achieved a victory. Others say their team gave up too much, too easily.
But the economic winners and
losers of the bill are starting to become clear. Here's a look at eight groups
who will feel their fortunes shift under the new act.
WINNERS
NASCAR: The car-racing giant
stands to get $70m (£43m) in tax breaks due to the extension of a 2004 law.
Though some saw the fiscal cliff debate as a way to pare back an unwieldy tax
code, there were several tax incentives that made it through this bill, according to Politico - including those for the
film industry, Puerto Rican rum, and railroad companies. "I don't know how
they got there, but in every bill that goes through congress there's always
something under the Christmas tree," says Robert Litan, research director
for Bloomberg Government. Still, he says, these extras are "minor"
compared to the tax breaks built into the rest of the bill.
Milk drinkers: The so-called
"dairy cliff" was averted when Congress passed a nine-month extension
of the Farm Bill, which had mostly expired in September. But one provision
expired on 31 December. Without it, the price of milk would revert to being set
by an archaic formula, sending dairy costs skyrocketing.
Semi-wealthy people: Those who
make between $250,000 and $400,000 a year (or $450,000 per household) have
something to celebrate. "Those were people who, until very recently,
thought their rates were going to go up," says Benjamin Passty, research
assistant professor at the Economics Center at the University of Cincinnati.
Instead, they'll see a permanent extension of the Bush tax cuts.
Those with a wealthy, elderly
bachelor uncle: The estate tax, which taxes income and property received
in an inheritance or through a gift from family, was a big target for Democrats
looking to raise revenue. There was talk of scaling it back to Clinton-era
levels, in which all gifts over $1m were subject to a 55% tax. But now gifts
under $5.12m remain free from tax, while the rate of taxed gifts go from 35 to
40%. "That's a tax burden that would skew towards the very wealthy,"
says Prof Passty. Those who hope to inherit their parent's billion-dollar bank
account will feel more of a pinch, but anyone hoping to get just a piece of
Great Uncle Archibald's dwindling, but still respectable estate. can spend
their new nest egg without fear of taxation.
Cincinnati, Ohio, and other
cities that depend on military and defence contracts to bolster their economy.
"We're one of the localities that would benefit by having strong defence
spending," says Passty. "Those defence dollars do translate into
specific economic benefits to some regions." Had the US gone over the
cliff, defence spending was to take a big hit. As it stands now, the decision
has been put off - but only for two months. So while the aerospace, engineering
and other jobs remain, so too does uncertainty about the future.
The long-term
unemployed: Traditionally, benefits for those out of work lasted only half
a year, but during the recession Obama pushed to extend those benefits to 99
weeks. "If they hadn't made the deal, people who had the extended
unemployment, their benefits would have expired," says Randall Holcombe,
professor of economics at Florida State University.
LOSERS
Mitt Romney: The very
wealthy will pay more in taxes thanks to tax cuts being eliminated for
individuals over $400,000. Those people will also be hit with an increased tax
on their investments. Their capital gains taxes will go from 15 to 20%.
"For most people there's no impact. There's a 5% increase in the rate who
are in that top 1%," says Holcombe. For those like former Republican
presidential candidate Mitt Romney who make much of their money through capital gains, that increase will add up.
Hospitals: The Taxpayer
Relief Act prevented a 27% cut to doctors for treatment they provide Medicare
patients. That would be a huge hit for providers who already get less for
Medicare patients versus those on private insurance. But the cut was prevented
by making cuts elsewhere - and as a result, hospitals will have to pick up more of the slack with less government money.
Members of Congress: As well
as the ire of a nation heaped on their shoulders for this patched-up,
last-minute deal that ducks the difficult decisions, members of Congress also face a
pay freeze under the terms of the bill. Just don't expect to hear any violins
playing in sympathy.
